Wo Long Fallen Dynasty Review
What is The Game About
Wo long Fallen Dynasty is an action-packed RPG developed by Team Ninja and published by Koei Tecmo. With its impressive character editor, players can create their own hero who is transported to the late Han Dynasty during the second century AD. Unlike actual historical events, this world is rife with demonic forces and evil entities that pose a constant threat to the inhabitants.
Story and Progression
The game’s plot and character development take a back seat to its gameplay, which revolves around completing missions. The game follows a predictable formula where you encounter new characters who require your assistance in defeating enemies and clearing out areas, ultimately leading you to a face off against the final boss.
This in turn gains you reverence among your peers and the next mission will begin. I couldn’t help but feel like Preston Garvey while playing as every settlement needed my help.

Game Mechanics
If you’re the type of player who thinks you can take on the final boss right away, think again, unless your the let me solo her guy then you will need to do some preparations first and increase your morale. In Wo long, the morale system plays a crucial role in determining your strength and defence. Your morale rank ranges from 1 to 20, with higher ranks providing a significant boost to your attack and defence. The final boss always has the highest morale rank, making it nearly impossible to defeat them without a proper build-up.
Fortunately, there are ways to increase your morale rank. Throughout the game’s map, you’ll come across marking flags and battle flags that, when raised, boost your morale. Killing enemies also raises your morale, so exploration is necessary to fully level up your character and be prepared for the final showdown. The game follows a standard, linear progression with branching paths, but rushing through it will result in a swift defeat.

Enemy & Combat
But bosses are not the main thing you will fight in game with a variety of human and demon-like enemies to overcome, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. The game’s combat mechanics are fluid and require the player to master stamina management. The back-and-forth battle between the player and enemies is based on gaining and avoiding losing stamina. A depleted stamina bar may lead to a broken stance and vulnerability to heavy attacks.
However, the combat is not simply about regular attacks. The player has access to spirit or heavy attacks, as well as unique martial arts moves that are tied to the weapon used. The importance of blocking and parrying also affects the stamina of both the player and the enemies, depending on the build being played. The game also offers an entire magic skill tree for players to explore, providing even more depth to the combat.
For those who struggle with combat, the game provides various options for assistance. The co-op system allows players to request help from others, while the reinforcement system allows for the recruitment of up to two AI-controlled allies. Although these allies may not deal significant damage or possess high intelligence, they can serve as effective distractions for enemies during combat.

Skills and levelling
Once the battle is won, you will receive a certain amount of Qi as a reward, which is used to enhance your character’s level. There are five virtues in the game, each associated with specific attributes, and you have the freedom to level them up in any order you desire. Additionally, you have the option to respec your skills at any time in the hidden village, which serves as your base of operations. This allows you to experiment with different attribute combinations and adjust your build as needed to overcome challenging bosses and enemies.

Weapons and Armors
To truly enhance your character’s strength, equipping the best gear is essential. Wo Long Fallen Dynasty offers a vast array of equipment, including four types of armor, three weapons, throwables, and accessories. These items can mainly be obtained as random loot drops from enemies and chests during missions.
You’ll have an extensive selection of weapons and armor designs to choose from, with variations in light, medium, and heavy categories. Each piece of equipment comes with its own set of skills and attributes that you can tailor to fit your specific playstyle.
Keep an eye out for gear that complements your character’s strengths and weaknesses, as they can make a significant difference in battle. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different combinations of weapons and armor to find the perfect setup for your character.

Look of the game
The world of Wo Long Fallen Dynasty is an awe-inspiring and stunning representation of the Han Dynasty. Despite featuring a vast number of missions, each chapter and mission possess a distinct ambiance and I never once felt like they were repetitive.
Unfortunately, I cannot share this sentiment when it comes to the game’s enemies and bosses. Their variety is limited, and by the time you reach the final missions, you are familiar with their moves and strategies, having battled and defeated them countless times.

Performance
As someone who played Wo Long Fallen Dynasty on the Xbox Series X, I can confidently say that my experience with the game was flawless. The game ran smoothly without any stuttering or frame drops, and the graphics were stunning with no colour issues to report. Additionally, I encountered no bugs or crashes during my playthrough.
It’s worth noting, however, that I cannot speak to the game’s performance on other platforms. It’s possible that the game may encounter issues on other consoles or PC setups, but from my personal experience, the Xbox Series X provided an optimal experience.
Overall, if you have an Xbox Series X and are looking for a visually stunning and seamless gaming experience, Wo Long Fallen Dynasty is definitely worth checking out.
Is The Game Worth Playing? Pros and Cons!
While Wo long may not break new ground in its genre, it’s still a solid addition to it. The game’s combat is challenging and rewarding, with bosses that require practice and grinding to overcome. The inclusion of reinforcement characters adds to the experience and makes battles more enjoyable.

The story may not be the game’s strongest suit, as it can feel too long and not entirely compelling. Nevertheless, it doesn’t try to be something it’s not, and the character development for the game’s main protagonists is decent.
Exploration in the game is decent, but it could have been more rewarding. There are no secrets on the map, and collectibles and their rewards serve no purpose. While the game’s weapons and armor system is enjoyable, it would have been great to have unique items hidden in chests for players to discover.
Despite its flaws, Wo long’s fluid combat and progression systems are enough to keep players hooked and engaged without feeling the need to rush to the end. Overall, it’s worth checking out for fans of the genre. The game is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X for $59.99.
