Starfield Wiki
Starfield What is the Story About?
Starfield is is a game set in the year 2330 in a world where humankind has stretched their reach beyond earths atmosphere and are now living amongst the stars. The new human ecosystem has expanded around 50 lightyears from earth in a region known as the settled systems. The game takes place 20 years after a great war between the two biggest factions in the settled systems, the United Colonies and Freestar Collective. The player takes on the role of a customizable character who is a member of Constellation, an organization of space explorers.
Starfield How Many Planets Are There?
The settled systems contains over 1000 explorable planets, located within 100 star systems. Each planet is unique (procedurally generated) and differs in gravity, biomes, plants, animals and much more. Its not all generated however, some of the planets will have large custom made cities, like New Atlantis which are part of the games main campaign.
Known Star Systems
- Alpha Centauri
- Cheyenne
- Jaffa
- Narion
- Porrima
- Sol
- Volii
Known Planets
- Jemison (home to New Atlantis)
- Gagarin
- Olivas

Starfield Gameplay Details
Starfield’s Combat Mechanics
Combat and general gameplay will take place in both 1st and 3rd person. When using a weapon you can choose to hip fire or ADS (Aim Down Sights). When firing your weapons, the player will be able to run, jump, crouch, slide and use your jetpack. Grenades will be available along with other explosive weapons and of course melee weapons.

Starfield How Does The Jetpack Work?
Jetpacks play a key role in combat and exploration during starfield, especially in low gravity environments. A boost meter will appear over your health bar while using it, and it recharges over time while not using it. NPCs can also have jetpacks as seen in several gameplay trailers, where shooting enemy jetpacks sends them into the air before exploding.
Starfield What is The Dialogue System Like?
Dialogue in Starfield has returned to a classic bethesda feel according to Todd Howard and is largely inspired by the very much praised Elder Scrolls Oblivion speech system “We’ve gone back to kind of a classic Bethesda-style dialogue [system]”, Howard said. “You’re looking at the character and how they emote, you have a series of choices there.”
Initially during conversations, you can pick an option that matches your playstyle, persuade, attack or i dont know. Once you choose your preferred option a new dialogue minigame will pop up with 4 different options that cost a different amount of points. The higher the points cost the better the outcome for you but you only have a certain amount of points to spend in conversation (based on your persuasion skills) so use them wisely.

Starfield Lockpicking & Pickpocketing Explained
Lockpicking will allow the player to access locked boxes, safes and containers that usually hold valuable loot inside of them. Unlike previous bethesda games however, lockpicking has been updated to match the futuristic setting and is now called a digipick or digital lockpick. The lockpicking method is very simple (too simple personally) you must match the shape to the missing parts of the sequence.
Pickpocketing is a common gameplay element for any bethesda game, including elder scrolls and fallout games. You can sneak and steal from enemies and friends alike, but be careful, you will end up with a bounty on your head.

Starfield Starship Customisation Options
Starship Gameplay Features
The Starship is a vital component of your time in starfield and allows you to travel from planet to planet and between star systems in game. The ship is fully customizable and allows you to alter the aesthetics, weapons, armors and shields and more. Of course you are not the only one in space and combat will be required to stave of those pesky space pirates. Watch out for the hull integrity getting too low and fight of raiders with your dual gun turrets and missiles.
Docking features also play a vital role, where you can board enemy (or Friendly) space craft to raid them, stop off at a space port to restock and refuel and to dock on planets to complete missions.
Ship Stats
The ships stats options are split into the following categories
- LAS – The Ships Laser Weapons
- BAL – Ballistic Weapons
- MSL – Missiles
- Hull – The integrity can be improved
- Shield – stronger shields mean stronger survivability
- Cargo – how much storage your ship has
- Crew – the space for crew mates and companions
- Jump Range (Light Years) – How far you can travel between star systems
- Mobility – how easy it is to move up, down, left and right
- Top Speed – how fast you move
- Mass – Higher mass will effect speed and mobility, but more importantly fuel consumption
All the categories can be upgraded and improved to make your ship better and better by upgrading different parts of the ship, which we will discuss below. The other main component you need to consider for your ships stats is fuel consumption and there are 6 component account for overall fuel usage.
- W0 – Laser Weapons
- W1 – Ballistic Weapons
- W2 – Missiles
- ENG – Engine
- SHD – Shield
- GRV – Gravity
All the 6 items listed above consume fuel the more you use them and they are self explanatory except gravity. Simply put, the higher the gravity environment you are in, the more fuel will be consumed. So in the vacuum of space, you will use low fuel, but on a high gravity planet, you need more fuel for the engines to counteract it.
Ship Customisation Options
You Starship will have plenty of customisable options and each part will improve the stats (mentioned above) in different ways. The image here shows a Magellan C2 Cockpit, which gives 18 reactor power, 22 equipment power. It also give +60 cargo space, +9 Health and 2 Crew Slots.

The Following parts can be customised on your starship:
Cockpit – The front part of your ship

- Health
- Crew Slots
- Mass
Engines – the large boosters at the back of the ship
- Class
- Engine Thrust
- Manoeuvring Thrust

Starfield Skills and Levelling Up Challenges
Skills in starfield are unique abilities and traits that you can unlock for your character to develop them how you want, based on your play style. Skills work by earning XP, which will level up your player, and each level you gain, that will unlock skill points for you to spend.
Skills are split into five main categories:
- Physical
- Social
- Combat
- Science
- Tech
According to Game Director Todd Howard he explained by saying, “You can unlock new skills as you level up, and then you rank those skills up by using them and completing challenges”
Each category has multiple skills available, which we will list below, and those skills in turn can be ranked up and improved through challenges. (Note: while new ranks will be available for your skills by completing challenges, you still need addition skill points to unlock those, so its possible you need at least 4 skill points to max out a skill)
Lastly it appears that the final rank of every skill is different to the first three, so fully maxing a skill might be worth doing for some skills and not for others, depending on your build.

Starfield All Combat Skills
Improve your combat gameplay by levelling up your combat skills, from ballistic weapons, guns and explosives. This covers all your combat stats as well like accuracy, damage, and all other combat gameplay stats.

Starfield Factions, Races, NPCs and Companions
What makes any bethesda game good is its great character design. Not the playable character, but the world of NPCs that make up each game and Starfield will be no exception. The world is full of many different factions, religions, and allegiances.
NPC’s can be human, alien, robots or artificial intelligence. Who you side with can alter your relationship with other NPCs and how you treat someone will also affect how others treat you.
Whether you travel alone or with a companion, starfield is full of unique and interesting characters with their own beliefs and backstories and we have listed them here.

Starfield What Are All The Factions In Starfield
There are many different factions in the Starfield and they each make up the many different parts of the overall story of the game. You can decide to join or fight against any of them, and each will have there own pros and cons of joining.
You can also join them based on your style of play, if you want to be a good guy, you can, if you prefer to steal, and murder your way through the game, like the crimson fleet would, then join them. You can even join a faction, simply to spy on them for another faction.
You can join multiple factions if you wish, but not all factions can be joined at once, some are one or the other, so you must pick a side.
Constellation
Constellation is your starting faction as you join this group of explorers committed to uncovering the mysteries of the galaxy. You begin your starfield journey as a new recruit for constellation.
United Colonies
These are the largest group in the settled systems of starfield, both militarily and politically and are in a bloody war with the freestar collective. Residence of the games largest city New Atlantis, they will play a major role in the story of the game.

Freestar Collective
A confederation of the three most distant planets in settled systems living in the walled capital city of Akila. This faction, regards personal freedoms highest among anything else. This also means however there is a little bit more lawlessness in the freestar collective than in the united colonies and new Atlantis.
Starfield design director, Emil Pagaliarulo, says the people of this city “believe in the sanctity of personal freedom and individuality” and Freestar Collective is said to represent the “space western fantasy”.
Crimson Fleet
Lead quest designer, Will Shen, describes Crimson Fleet as “the de facto choice for anyone looking to do an evil playthrough of Starfield” and you can join this group of pirate space raiders as they wreak havoc in the settled systems.
XenoFresh Corporation
The XenoFresh Corporation is a faction in Starfield’s 3rd largest city, Neon. This pleasure city, quickly turned from a regular, yet bustling fishing city, to one whose major export is drugs, after the discovery that one of the fish was found to produce a psychoactive drug called aurora. This left the faction with a lot more time to party fuelled by easy money.
Neon Street Rats
Neon street rats are a faction that is located in the city of neon, a city on a fishing planet. Unlike the XenoFresh corporation, this faction is more underground and filled with regular people that live in the lower echelons of the society.
Ryujin Industries
A mega corporation that is very profitable to be a member of, however joining is not easy. You will need to be invited to the faction, by doing the right missions and pleasing the right kinds of people. This faction focuses fully on the corporate side of the game.
Ecliptic Mercenaries
Nothing much is known about this faction
Spacers
Nothing much is known about this faction
House Va’ruun
Nothing much is known about this faction
Starfield A Look at Religions In The Settled System
Not much is known about the in-game religions of starfield other than what has been revealed in the games traits section.

House of the Enlightened
Appears to be a someone zealot faction located in new Atlantis, perhaps they see themselves as Luddites which would be the opposite of the other big religion Sanctum Universum.
Sanctum Universum
This religion is located in new Atlantis and has strong belief in science and technology, their name Sanctum Universum, means the Holy Universe.
Great Serpents
These people worship a giant snake? Who punishes anyone who doesn’t use anti gravity?
Starfield All Companions List
Companions are NPCs who will follow you on your journey across the galaxy and help with doing missions and tasks. In game they will play very similar to how companions worked in The Outer Worlds, which inspired multiple features in the game.
- Companions can be levelled up, and may have their own abelites
- You can give companions commands to help focus them in combat
- You can customise their weapons, armors and skills
- Companions will be not just human, but alien and even robots
- Companions will have their own companion missions that help explore their backstories

Vasco
Get to know your next favorite Companion: VASCO, Constellation’s expeditionary robot and just one of several companions you’ll meet during your travels in Starfield. Who doesn’t want to explore the stars with a lovable robot at their side? Even among the team members at Bethesda Game Studios, VASCO is a standout favorite.
“It’s always fascinating to see who the breakout characters are, who players start to gravitate toward,” says Lead Artist Istvan Pely. “Even early in the process, before we had the full suite of characters, people in the studio started gravitating toward a robot. Toward VASCO. He’s your buddy, but he’s a robot. But all of the sudden everyone on the team decided ‘I want a relationship with VASCO. He’s so cool. He’s so much fun.’ He became a breakout character, and we were just getting started.”
Starfield NPCs Overview
Their are plenty of NPCs to get to know in your time in the game and we have listed some of the most well known ones below.

Barrett
Not a lot of information is known about Barrett other than his name.
